LRE- The Do Better Movement

Course Description:

Calibrating our understanding of inclusion today is critical to inclusion’s success. This session guides participants through the evolution of inclusion over time through humour and real life stories.

In this session, Shelley shares her own story of inclusion as a student, and how her experiences have impacted her to do the work she does today. She connects her story to current understandings of inclusive education and reflects on how we all need to shift to increase inclusive access for students.

The Inclusive planning process is aiming to situate Disability as an identity, not a deficit, and so to determine what supports and strategies students require, teams are shifting to look at needs, instead of disabilities, as a reference point. In this session we will connect to Universal Design for Learning principles and look at how we can plan for a student with a disability, in ways that can support many students in a classroom.

A Nervous System Approach to Diversity Work: Using a nervous system approach for intercultural interactions and decreasing polarization

  • Kirkhof Center Grand River Room (2250) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

Studying our nervous system as an access point for change can increase our ability to be effective during challenging life circumstances. According to Deb Dana (2020), the nervous system is key because when the brain and the nervous system do not agree, the nervous system will win every time. One influential framework for understanding the nervous system is Polyvagal Theory by Stephen Porges. Polyvagal Theory is often referred to as the neuroscience of safety and connection, and seen as a core component of trauma work. Neuroscience in trauma therapy has exploded in the past twenty-five years. It has helped us understand our experiences, emotions, relationships, stories, communication, and ability to cope in more nuanced ways.

Ethical Decision Making in Administration and Supervision

Course Description:

Managing an organization so that ethical practices will be consistently valued and maintained requires highly skilled and experienced administrators and supervisors who can manage the dilemmas of ethical decision-making. Ethical practice for administrators and supervisors requires much more than assuring ethical clinical behavior of staff and is far more complex in its scope and potential impact of the organization. It requires administrators and supervisors to maintain a focus on establishing organizational practices that clearly define what ethical conduct is rewarded and what unethical conduct is discouraged while attempting to withhold punishment and establish a culture and practice that champions safety. Administrators do not get it right every time. So many factors contribute to the management of frequent and complex ethical dilemmas that are inherent in the role of administration: complexity of service delivery, relevant laws and policies, staff experience and training, financial considerations, staff morale, current affairs with lasting impacts, and the perception of everyone in the organization (from Board Members to Clients to community stakeholders). This course is targeted to and uniquely designed for agency administrators and supervisors. It provides an opportunity to learn from peers, practice realistic strategies, and review relevant guidelines. It is intended to be practical, fast-paced, and interactive using multiple case studies, application of frameworks, and participant sharing.

A Friday For Therapists Grief Training, Lunch, Connection

  • Grand Rapids Art Museum (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

Grief can be one of the greatest life stressors we face. Grief can be complicated, a shock to our system, and keep us stuck. Moving forward and healing from grief is challenging at the least and what seems impossible for some. Recent research on the effects of grief on our physiology, biology, and psychology can help us better understand how to support and guide individuals through the healing process. In this training we will explore what science tells us about grief in the brain, on our immune system, and on adjusting to this life change. How does the mind adapt to grief? How can we use cognitive, biology, somatic, and parts work to move forward and adjust to loss? What mental processes are helpful? Those we love are integrated into our sense of self. When we lose someone dear to us, we naturally feel a loss of self. With love comes loss in many forms. So how can we prepare for the losses in life? We will explore both the science of grief and go through practices that help us reduce the functional impairment of grief and move forward essentially remapping our nervous system to a new sense of self.
