Functional Behavior Assessment: Introduction and Going Deeper

  • Kalamazoo Reg. Educational Service Agency Service Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

Students who exhibit consistent minor problem behaviors (10-15% of the school population) benefit from basic and less intrusive Functional Behavior Assessment procedures that may be conducted by someone other than an individual well-versed in behavioral principles. Practical FBA presents and applies the FBA technology for use by school personnel in a proactive manner. Practical FBA is specifically designed for use with students that exhibit chronic problems that are not dangerous and have not been adequately addressed through previous assessment and intervention. When used early for students identified at-risk for serious behavioral problems, Practical FBA methods may prevent the escalation of student behaviors. It offers a relatively simple and efficient process to guide behavior support planning.

Understanding Pain: Migraines, Headaches, Neck and Low Back Pain

Course Description:

The course is directly relevant to social work professionals, as the most current (2018) evidence shows the confluence of high burdens: chronic pain-related

disability (such as with spinal pain) or reduced socioeconomic standing and perspectives (such as with chronic headaches) and pharmaceutical agents dependence and overuse/abuse, contributing to higher-than-expected vulnerability and potential failure of selective and indicated interventions. The course will address the socioethical issue of appropriateness of disclosure of protected information, especially in the setting of chronic pain and elevated risk of drug dependence and substance use. The course will also provide the social worker with a crucial update on the physiology of pain based on most recent neuroscientific research, most importantly, neurotransmitter imbalances observed in chronic pain, update on medications used on-label and off-label for management of pain, as well as specific recommendations on establishment of realistic pain control and activity level goals, reduction of chronicity, and non-medication approaches available to sufferers of acute and chronic pain.

Trauma Awareness: Empowering Self-Healing Communities

  • Bernhard Center Western Michigan University (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

The goal with our program for this event is to ensure that there is time for attendees to not only discuss the work around trauma that is being done in their sectors, but also to have time to create action plans with people who may have common problems and solutions. Together we created a program that would allow for attendees to do some learning with Dr. Laura Porter, and hear about her expertise and knowledge around the subject before they break out into their chosen sector: Education, Health, Government, Community Work, or Human Resources. Each breakout session is scheduled to be facilitated by a leader in that sector. The first session will focus on laying the groundwork and sharing out information to create a framework for the next session. After lunch, attendees will head to the second breakout session where the facilitators will help them to create action plans around how they want to see their sectors become more trauma-informed. After this, everyone will head back to the main room for a general assembly and a closing session, a Call to Action, led by Dr. Porter.

The Science of Fat and Sugar: Appetite, Eating Disorders & the Reward System

Course Description:

The seminar “The Science of Fat and Sugar” concentrates on the recent advances in the field of nutrition science and the applicable guidance for health care professionals. As stated in a recent authoritative review

(DiMaria-Ghalili et al.,2014) “nutrition is a critical component of acute and chronic disease management, as well as health and wellness across the health care professions, each profession must reevaluate its

individual nutrition-related professional competencies before the establishment of meaningful interprofessional collaborative nutrition competencies.”

It is important to emphasize that the scope of practice of health care professionals includes not only curative and palliative care but also health promotion, disease prevention, and coordination of care.

There are numerous important discoveries and observed phenomena that are relevant to social workers, case managers, psychologists, nutritionists, and nutritional counselors. One of the important changes in the

current 5th edition of DSM is the inclusion of new entities in the chapter on Feeding and Eating Disorders: especially the avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. Given the popularity of restrictive diets among the

general population of the USA, and an even higher occurrence of restrictive dieting in the overweight/obese categories, it would be highly desirable that providers of nursing home, assisted living, nursing,

psychosocial and counseling care were able to supply scientifically sound information, including that on low-fat and low-carbohydrate type diets. This will allow for better rapport with the patient, better diagnostic

approaches in regard of the cited and other feeding and eating disorders and provide avenues for personalized care and treatment of such patients (Willis, 2015).

Working with Under-Resourced Learners K-12

  • Kalamazoo Reg. Educational Service Agency Service Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

Are you struggling with how to help students in your care who come to school unprepared to face your academic or behavioral expectations? Do you have difficulty getting parents or guardians to come to school or even to talk to you? If so, you are like many educators serving “under-resourced” students who lack the financial, material, or emotional support necessary to be successful in school. Millions of American school-age children are “under-resourced” and at risk of failure in school. Compared with other wealthy countries, we rank at or near the bottom on most measures of well-being or “access to resources” like material goods, relationships, health and education. For students, mental, emotional, relational, parental, and other key resources are vital to their success.

This workshop will help you to better understand the culture of poverty and how it influences values and behavior as well as ways to connect with students and their families in a meaningful and effective way. You’ll learn about strategies and interventions that work best given available resources, increase support systems for all students and their families and strategies for managing behavior.

Kalamazoo Wraps 7th Annual System of Care Conference

Course Description:

In Kalamazoo County, families, youth, community leaders, staff from mental health, juvenile justice, education, child welfare and primary care health have been working toward transforming the way services and supports are developed and provided for over 20 years.  This effort was expanded in 2005 when our community received a six-year 9-million dollar SAMHSA grant to further develop and expand our system of care work. In 2015 we were awarded an additional 4 million dollar SAMHSA System of Care Expansion grant.

Today, the system of care continues to evolve.  The 7th Annual Kalamazoo Wraps System of care Conference will strengthen the foundation created over the past 20 years and continue building the framework for our on-going efforts to empower family and youth voice, strengthen interagency partnerships, maximize resources, and create a highly skilled workforce.
