Michigan Council of Nephrology Social Workers (MCNSW) Annual Symposium

Course Description:

Michigan Council of Nephrology Social Workers is the Michigan chapter of the Council of Nephrology Social Workers affiliated with the National Kidney Foundation. This is the 29th year of our symposium which seeks to provide professional training for nephrology and kidney transplant social workers to improve our care of chronic kidney patients (CKD), end stage kidney patients (ESKD) and kidney transplant patients. This year, our topics are trauma-informed care and implicit bias.

Disrupting the Narrative of Youth Suicide and Mental Health

Course Description:

This day of learning is designed with school mental health care teams in mind. You will hear keynotes from prominent mental health experts and advocates who have experienced the impact of suicide and have dedicated their lives to telling their stories, normalizing conversations around mental health, and building protective forces within school communities. You will attend breakout sessions from a variety of tri-county providers and Michigan organizations that work to prevent and also support families through suicide, attempts, and mental health issues in general. You will learn how to access services and will have opportunities to meet providers and ask questions about how they can help support your students and families. QPR Gatekeeper Training will be available to participants who have not been trained in thier school district yet.

Demystifying Sex: A Relational Approach to Sex Therapy

Course Description:

Sexual health and experiencing is a beautiful, complex facet of many relationship dynamics. This course is designed to immerse participants in the various points of connection, intersectionality, diversity and pleasure that make up human sexuality. Students will learn principles to sexual health including consent and boundaries, medical and mental health concerns, and sensual intimacy in comparison to the erotic. Participants will explore working with non-traditional partnership dynamics, navigating fantasies, foreplay, and affairs all while intertwining social work values as an affirming provider.

Sex and Social Work: What Providers Need to Know

Course Description:

Sexual health is an extremely underrepresented field within the world of social work. Participants in this course will follow the treatment process - from intake to termination - while learning at least two new assessment strategies, multiple intervention methods, best practices for ethical dilemmas, provider biases and how to ethically work with/through them, and engagement strategies for communicating as an affirming provider of sexual health. Participants of this course will take away direct dialogue pertaining to affirming consent, provider and client boundary setting, strategies to work with the DSM-5 diagnoses, and multicultural considerations to invite in the room. This workshop aims to fill in the gaps other educational opportunities have not so as to prepare all participants with empowerment when working with client sexual health concerns.

2021 Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital Stroke Conference

Course Description:

Rehabilitation professionals are continually exploring ways to enhance their treatments to improve patient outcomes. The keynote presentation will give rehabilitation specialists knowledge of the patients journey from acute care through rehab. The 2021 Stroke Conference will explore the medical implications on rehab, communication strategies for aphasia, improving outcomes using aquatic therapy, and utilizing driver’s rehab for stroke patients. Avoiding rehospitalization and care transitions following stroke will also be presented. All participants will benefit from the presentation on the identifies priorities of the Community Health Needs Assessment and strategies to address these needs as they relate to the stroke patients we serve.
