Brave New World: Balancing Ethics, Pain Management and Addictions

Course Description:

Ethical practice is of critical importance for all practitioners in social work, nursing, counseling, psychology, peer coaching, and chemical addictions disciplines. There are competing needs for self-determination and evidence-based implementation. Ethical dilemmas appear in dealing with social justice, management of resources, and consumer-direction and safety. A process is reviewed to help understand ethics relating to professions, licensure expectations, and methods to resolve conflicts in micro, mezzo, and macro practice. A case-based approach will enable resolution methods for both policies and practices. The program also addresses ethics and public health with the opioid crisis in our communities. An approach to working with people who need pain management will be introduced. The program focuses on helping individuals at risk for substance use disorders, especially increased alcohol use due to the pandemic. The treatment options discussed relates to managing pain and minimizing risk for addiction. Special attention will be given to prevention and intervention using best practices in dealing with overdose from opiates.

6th Annual UP Fall Substance Use Disorder Conference- Annie Lange presents Secondary Trauma and Self Care and Seeking Calm in Chaos: Empowering the Helper and the Client

  • Lake Superior State University (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

Secondary traumatic stress occurs because of exposure to the traumatic experiences of others. Professionals and other caregivers that are exposed to secondary traumatic stress can develop symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. This exposure results in adverse effects to the mind, brain, and body. In this workshop, you will learn about these adverse effects from a physical and emotional perspective. You will discuss concrete intervention models and strategies that promote reduced anxiety and a sense of well-being for both the client and the helper. You will also learn mindfulness techniques and the importance of self-compassion.

IFS: This workshop is designed to be a day of self discovery as well as an introduction to the evidence based Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model created by Richard Schwartz. This model is intended to revitalize both internal healing, as well as, work with clients. IFS is based on the principle that we all have different sub personalities or parts that have positive intent but when out of balance can create havoc. The “Self” is our true and spiritual center. According to IFS, qualities of the “Self” include compassion, curiosity, connection, calm, courage, clarity, caring and creativity. As clinicians, the tool we bring to our work is our selves. In order to be an effective tool, it requires a willingness to look inward. You will learn and practice skills that support a non-pathologizing and empowering method in service of the helper as well as client.
