Clinical Practice with Groups (Group Therapy 101)

Course Description:

Group therapy has many iterations, many challenges, and many rewards. Clinical work with groups can also be daunting, overwhelming, and sometimes confusing. There is also misinformation associated with group therapy, for example, the “type” of clinician or healthcare worker who would be “qualified” to engage in such important clinical work or the type of group member who may be difficult and disruptive in the group. This presentation will dispel stereotypes with evidence-based practice research and proven group theories that prove to assist with providing a safe and beneficial experience for both the group member and the group facilitator. This presentation is foundational, offering concepts and theories to start a group. This presentation will be in sections, starting with pre-planning, beginning stages of the group, the first group meeting and the working stages of the group, and descriptions of what types of informal roles that might be assumed by members. Please come with questions and hopefully, an idea for starting a group. There will be time for case vignette discussion as well.

Guardian of the Setting: What is Neutrality in an Ontological Psychoanalysis

  • Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

Practice Gap/Need and Course Description:

In a series of papers, the author has discussed the analyst’s neutrality as an activity: a constantly moving position and an always-evolving process characterized by the analyst’s thinking and curiosity about how to help the patient better know and become himself. In this paper, the author extends some ideas about the activity of neutrality to include the ways that we help patients to hold paradoxical realities intrinsic to transference and play in analytic work. He suggests that Winnicott’s guardianship of the setting for the emergence of playing and Bion’s guardianship of the setting to facilitate reverie, were their own de facto expressions of the need for neutrality within the ontological thread of analysis. Both Winnicott and Bion were concerned about the ways that we interfere with the emergence of playing and reverie. The author suggests that understanding and being are two dimensions of the analytic process that work in concert with each other in analytic process. Neutrality often works quietly in spaces between epistemological and ontological approaches to clinical psychoanalysis.

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Link their conceptions of analytic neutrality to the patient’s play and reverie in the analysis.

2. Demonstrate awareness of ways that they may facilitate or interfere with the emergence of reverie and play in the analytic process.

The Laughter Prescription!

  • Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

The course taught by Kim Reynolds will discuss "The Laughter Prescription." Laughter is a normal and natural physiologic response to certain stimuli. This course will show that laughter may also have serious positive physiological effects for those who engage in it on regular basis. By prescribing laughter to our patients in a structural way, we may be able to use these natural, free, and easily distributable positive benefits to enrich the lives of our patients. This class will review the current medical understanding of laughter's physiologic effects and ways we might best harness this natural modality for our patients.

Objective:

To bring awareness that laughter has the potential to significantly affect the quality of our work lives. Humor helps relieve tension, reassures people, and draws them together. It strengthens the bonds between patients and members of their care team. It even seems to increase peoples willingness to disclose, so it may help with obtaining good information during patient interviews.
