Course Description:
Workshop #1: Healing Emotional and Physical Pain through Yoga This workshop aims to equip the social worker with additional tools to understand the human condition, assisting the clinician to be more effective by learning self-regulation skills via the yogic "mindful breath-movement-focus" techniques. The tenet is that the Mind/Body needs to be considered as a single, dynamic unit, and that principle should inform all aspects of the Social Work profession. Neuroscience research that supports the efficacy of yogic practices as a healing modality will be reviewed. Special precautions for person's who have survived trauma will be described. Application to pain conditions will be interwoven throughout this presentation.
Workshop # 2: Ethical Considerations in Yoga Informed Social Work. addresses issues within this emerging field. The ethical dilemma of combining Yoga with traditional Social Work practice will be discussed. This training will explore the special conditions under which traditional Social Work practice might include yogic techniques and still be consistent with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics.
Workshop #3: Self Care and Experiential Applications of Yoga Practice, applies the key points from earlier sessions into a personal physical practice. This program will be a gentle yoga flow (continual movement with breath and focus). Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a floor-mat yoga class, and participants who prefer to remain seated will be acomodated with verbal instructions. (Please bring your own mat and wear comfortable clothing.)
