Psychological Trauma

Course Description:Dr. Newton has worked in a variety of settings, providing mental health services, case management, and clinical oversight to a wide range of individuals. She began her career as a case manager with Orchards Children’s Services in Detroit working with children and families in the Wayne County foster care system. Course Description:

Weight stigma, also known as weight bias, fatphobia, or anti-fat bias, describes the systematic oppression that people in larger bodies experience in occupational, social, and medical systems. Exploring the Connection Between Domestic Violence and Substance Use Disorder

Course Description:

In collaboration with Sanford Behavioral Health, Harbor Hall, and MyMichigan Health, this presentation will focus on the topic of "Exploring the Connection Between Domestic Violence and Substance Use Disorder" presented by Brittany Blevins.

Description:

Domestic violence and substance abuse are two societal issues which amay be deeply connected. Substance use and abuse may exacerbate domestic violence, be used as a tool by the abuser to coerce and control, and may also serve as a coping mechanism for Survivors. How can we provide best care for survivors while understanding that substance use may be a part of their journey?

Objective:

1. Define Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, & Substance Use Disorder and provide statistics on their intersectionality.

2. Deeply explore the many ways that SUD keeps Survivors with their abusers longer and why, including trauma bonding, coercion, power and control, financial abuse, sexual abuse, alienation from survivors’ support systems, and using substances as a coping mechanism for DV.

3. Use the Stages of Change Model to meet our survivors where they are at and to provide best services for support. Not only are DV and SUD often deeply interconnected, but many of the pathways to recovery and freedom are as well.

IA Day of Revitalization: Stress Management for Educators

Dress Casually – we will incorporate movement into this session.

According to a poll conducted by the National Education Association in January 2022, 90% of educators reported that burnout is a serious problem and 55% endorsed a plan to leave the field “sooner than expected.” As many educators may have already experienced, burnout and prolonged stress are associated with emotional exhaustion, a sense of decreased personal accomplishment, and often times, detachment from work. Grief., Loss and Healing

Course Description:

Loss is inevitable. In life, we lose loved ones, relationships, opportunities, independence, cognitive functioning and physical abilities. Grief is the common process we experience as a result of our loss. The grieving process is different for each client – there is no “normal” time frame for healing. Emotional healing has been found to be effective in helping clients overcome grief and loss. Emotional healing is impacted by a client’s emotional stability, culture, socioeconomic status, spiritual beliefs and overall wellbeing. This workshop will explore the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. In addition, this workshop will focus on current treatment modalities, practical case studies and the presentation of skills and techniques to equip providers with the tools necessary to aid their clients with processing, understanding, effectively coping with, healing through and accepting their grief experience.

Compassion Fatigue: Addressing Secondary Trauma in our Lives

  • Training and Treatment Innovations (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

Compassion fatigue differs from burnout in that burnout is caused by stress, while compassion fatigue is caused by caring. Other names for compassion fatigue include: vicarious traumatization; secondary trauma; and secondary PTSD. Compassion fatigue is the emotional residue that one carries as a result of working with clients exposed to trauma. Signs of compassion fatigue include a loss of energy, grief, anger, frustration, tardiness, depression, feelings of hopelessness, irritability, sleep problems, flashbacks, erosion of idealism, spiritual distress, and a shift in one’s world view. People vulnerable to compassion fatigue include mental health workers, addictions professionals, individuals with heavy trauma caseloads, counselors who deal with death and dying, individuals who work with traumatized children and sexual abuse survivors, medical professionals, fire fighters, and the clergy. Participants will leave this interactive, skill-building session with tools that will enable them to prevent and overcome compassion fatigue.

Has Michigan Gone to Pot? Current Cannabis Practices and Controversies: Medical Ethics and Pain Management

  • Horizons Conference Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Course Description:

As of November 2018, both medical and recreational marijuana are legal in Michigan. Marijuana remains classified as a Schedule 1 drug by the US Drug Enforcement Administration.(DEA)-the same as heroin, LSD, methamphetamines and peyote. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recognized or approved the marijuana plant as medicine. Such discrepancies lead to confusion among physicians, NPs, nurses, PAs and allied health care professionals as to what they can and can’t prescribe or treat with medical marijuana and for what conditions. How do the decriminalization and legalization of recreational marijuana play into this landscape? What is the role of medicine, the “big pot/big tobacco” industry and politics? How addictive is marijuana (medical and recreational?) What is cannabis use disorder? What do evidence based studies show as well as evidence and data from states like Colorado? What are the dangers and risks of edible cannabis for children? These questions are answered at this conference.
